Or maybe I didn't really understand the question. Post Reply Preview. Farkled: my practice up until now has been pretty much what you described. Ziggy, Curmudgeon at large! You can also use green grass that is under diffused light. Fastball95 Steve Leach 11 years ago. IF you shoot RAW, you can get a stop either way without real harm if you are close to the right exposure to start with.

Same with an adjustment to WB. Are you shooting more studio work maybe and have to work with the different temperatures of light that cause an issue or work with some wide spectrum of lighting conditions? I shoot outdoors, so maybe my metering needs are just different? Georgi26 Posted 11 years ago. Edited by Georgi26 member 11 years ago. Sep 02, 1 Hey guys, I have read the "Need an Exposure Crutch" multiple times and I have the basic ideas of how to meter off of your palm which would basically rid my need of worrying about what type of metering to use.. Sep 02, 2 The way I understand it, you adjust the second parameter either SS or aperture until the camera says you're 1 stop overexposed.

Sep 02, 3 If your shooting manual make sure your not casting a shadow on the palm. Sep 02, 4 Ah I understand it a bit more clearly now, the palm is usually about 1 stop overexposed from proper exposure, hence the stop up via aperture or shutter. Sep 02, 10 Moving to spot metering is the best thing I ever did - I still screw it up but then it's my fault! Sep 02, 11 I like spot metering too but for fast action sports, the meter goes crazy as I focus on different subjects all the time, so I was hoping palm metering would give me more consistent results without having to worry about ECing for spot every shot!

I have a very good friend was in the Corps to I was at New River and he was at Cherry Point and we've been talking about going back down there for some reminiscing and a beer or two. I just had my first TLR and light meter.

I have Lumu for spot meter as well. Took a screen on that Sunny rule too. Pretty much ready right? In the past I would photo using a gray card or look for a spot in the scenery with a middle gray and use the reading. It worked out well with my f1 camera. But now shooting high contest areas make it more difficult. As a result, I am trying to learn the zone system.

Most teaching I find always leave some component out. Is their a good teaching video available. Good to see a comprehensive article on light metering, and why it is important.

These are used to meter the highlight side, and then the fill-light side of a scene or person. The amount of fill light, or key light is adjusted so that the contrast does not go beyond the capabilities of the film.

Wonder why you see movie set ups outdoors in daylight, but with lots of big reflectors and sometimes huge movie lights? Contrast ratio is why. Thanks to Matt Day for sending me here via his YouTube channel. This is the kind of information I was looking for. Just what I was looking for, thank you. Thanks for pointing out that spot metering is one of the best ways to get a satisfying focus when taking pictures. Getting to take pictures of the sceneries would surely be a must. Login Register.

I've done the palm thing years ago with film.

It was sometimes useful. It's a different thing than shooting film, but you'll get used to it very quickly. Shooting JPGs is like shooting slide film. You're stuck with what you get. Have fun!
