Why spider man reboot

In terms of cinematic shelf-life, five years is not long enough for most people to forget that a movie existed. So why reboot a property like Spider-Man so soon? Money, for one thing. Other big players in the franchise like Kirsten Dunst or director Sam Raimi would've also gotten fatter paychecks - and Raimi was pushing for more creative control on Spider-Man 4 , after Sony forced him to wedge so many story elements into Spider-Man 3 that the whole thing became a bloated mess that most fans point to as the worst in the series.

With an inflating budget in the hundred millions and friction with the director who made the franchise so popular, how would a little studio like Sony sarcasm get the Spider-Man ship back on track? Why, with a fresh start of course - reboot to the rescue. He was young — like his audience — funny, flawed and relatable.

After all, an audience can be asked only so many times to watch Uncle Ben die while muttering something about power and responsibility. And yet Sony has finally found a way to evolve a well-worn origin story. Like the two versions that came before, the story centered on a young, awkward white guy. The movie details the origin story of Miles Morales voiced by Shameik Moore , the teenage son of a black policeman Brian Tyree Henry and a Puerto Rican nurse Luna Lauren Velez , who gets bitten by — you guessed it — a radioactive spider.

Miles has patrolled the streets of New York City for years in the comics, but his big-screen debut thrusts him into the larger pop-culture conversation. The two produced, and Lord co-wrote the film. The movie suggests that anyone — no, really, anyone — can wear the mask. For Sony, that means an endless number of sequel and spin-off possibilities: the studio has already greenlighted Spider-Verse 2 and a Gwen Stacy movie.

Miles proves to be more than just a Peter redux. And Miles is just plain cooler than Peter — he has plenty of friends and a talent for graffiti art that eventually finds its way into his costume.

The entire core cast was set to return, but this time around Raimi was intent on finally bringing to the screen a Spider-Man villain close to his heart: Vulture. As the script developed, Raimi also threw Felicia Hardy into the mix with Anne Hathaway in the role, though instead of becoming Black Cat the character would become the villain Vulturess in the film.

And thus, he and Sony decided to part ways, with the filmmaker describing the split thusly :. Go ahead with your reboot, which you've been planning anyway. Thank you for not wasting the studio's money, and I appreciate your candor. The curious thing about all of this, though, is that Sony seemed to be planning to cancel Spider-Man 4 for quite some time. Mere hours after it was announced that Spider-Man 4 was scrapped and the release date was kaput, Sony revealed that James Vanderbilt—who penned the initial draft of Spider-Man 4 — had already written a reboot called The Amazing Spider-Man and the film was coming out in The studio moved to its second reboot with Spider-Man: Homecoming , which was a smashing success and led to Spider-Man: Far from Home and now an additional sequel.

Regardless, the impact that Raimi had on not only the Spider-Man character but also the superhero genre as a whole is undeniable.
